Travelling dates

Q&A
It depends on when your pass was first issued. If your firearms pass has expired after five years, you can still apply for an extension within a 10-year period from the first date of issue.

Example: A pass issued on 1 January 2022 will expire on 1 January 2027. If you apply for an extension before 1 January 2027, it will be extended until 1 January 2032. If you do not apply for an extension until 2029, the pass will still be extended but only by the remaining period up to 2032, that is, in the example given, for two years.

If your pass was issued more than 10 years ago, you cannot apply for an extension but must in stead apply for a new firearms pass.

have valid weapon certificates. Therefore, if your weapon certificate has expired, you must apply for a new weapon certificate before you apply to have the weapon entered on your firearms pass. If you have already applied and been granted a valid weapon certificate, we will update the dates on your firearms pass if you apply for an extension.

Please note that an extension of a firearms pass does not automatically result in an extension of your weapon certificate; you must also lodge a separate application for the weapon certificate.

All citizens in Denmark aged 15 and over can obtain MitID. If you do not have one now, you can order one. You can order MitID through your bank or at borger.dk.

If you are a European citizen you will be able to use your country's electronical identification (eID) to access the form.

If you do not have MitID or eID, you must send the information we need to process your application by letter along with a receipt for the payment of the required fee. See contact details.

However, please be aware that the processing time will be considerably longer if you choose to send your application by letter. The reasons are that sending the application by letter increases the risk of errors, that we must spend more time on manually entering your data in the system and that the delivery time for letters is typically up to five days.

No fees are charged for applications for firearms passes, import/export licences for weapons and weapon declarations.
Your firearms pass will be valid for five years. The pass can be extended once by an additional five years. Altogether, the maximum period of validity is ten years from the first date of issue.

Once you have submitted the online form, you will receive a receipt through Digital Post. If we need any further information, we will contact you in connection with the case processing. When the case processing is complete, you will receive the firearms pass by letter.

For current processing times, please check the current status on weapons.

During peak seasons, holiday periods and bank holidays, processing times may be longer.

You will need a licence from the police to import/export weapons into/out of Denmark. If the import/export is for a temporary period, you can use a firearms pass. The firearms pass is valid for travelling in connection with hunting or competition events which must be documented by an invitation or other evidence of the hunting or competition event in the destination member state. When you apply, you will be granted a firearms pass that is valid in all EU member states (European Firearms Pass).
You can apply to have a new weapon entered or an existing weapon extended on your firearms pass in our self-service portal which you can access at the top of this page. Remember to send your physical blue firearms pass to the Permit Department (Tilladelser) as every change to the pass requires a physical update.

If you merely want to have a weapon removed from the firearms pass, you must send the firearms pass along with a note saying what weapon you want to have deleted.
You must bring your firearms pass when you import/export your weapons into/out of Denmark and into/out of other EU member states.
Please note the rules that apply in the country to or through which you are to travel.
You must declare weapons, weapon components, weapon accessories and ammunition in connection with temporary transfers. You can use the weapon declaration for travels across the world. It is your own responsibility to check the legislation of the country to which you are travelling and any countries that you travel through.

A declaration must also be used if you bring ammunition and weapon accessories which cannot be entered on a firearms pass, such as a sound moderator and a sight to be fitted on your rifle.

Please note that weapons, weapon components and ammunition that you declare in the declaration form must be re-imported within three months. However, hunters and competition shooters can re-import weapons and unused ammunition for up to 24 months.

If you want to declare weapons, you must fill in the declaration form and hand it in at the nearest customs house in connection with your outbound and inbound journey. You will find a list of the customs clearance locations of the Danish Customs Agency on Toldstyrelsen website.
A firearms pass acts as travel identification that enables you to travel with registered rifles, barrels, shotguns, combination weapons, pistols and revolvers and a reasonable amount of ammunition for hunting or competition shooting in Europe.

A total of up to 14 weapons or weapon components can be entered on a firearms pass. A rifle system and an interchangeable barrel count as two weapons on the firearms pass.

The country to which you travel may ban certain types of weapons or may require that you obtain permission from the authorities of the relevant country in advance. When you fill in the application form for a firearms pass, your information on the weapon will form the basis of a classification of the weapon which is decisive for whether the weapon is subject to a permission or is banned in the other EU member states. This will appear from the physical firearms pass that you will receive.

Hunters and competition shooters habitually resident in Denmark can be issued with a firearms pass. It is a condition that you have a valid licence to possess and use a firearm for hunting or competition shooting. You will also need a separate licence for the weapon. If it is a shotgun, it must be registered before it can be entered on a firearms pass. Please note that special rules apply to shotguns purchased before 10 February 2000.

A firearms pass is valid for five years and can be extended by a maximum of five years from the date of expiry. Please note that another validity may apply to the certificates of the weapons on the firearms pass. If you renew a weapon certificate, the weapon on the firearms pass must also be renewed.

A firearms pass covers travelling within the EU. If you want to travel outside the EU, you must declare your weapons instead. This also applies if you bring weapon components that cannot be entered on the firearms pass, such as a sound moderator or night-vision scope to be fitted on your rifle.

If, as a private individual resident outside Denmark, you are to travel through Denmark with weapons, you must have a firearms pass or a declaration if you are to stay temporarily for up to three months in the country to which you are travelling. If the weapon is to stay abroad for more than three months, you will need an import/export licence to travel through Denmark (transit).

Please note that the legal provisions on transportation of weapons also apply when you travel through or are in transit in Denmark. The rules appear from section 11 of the Danish Executive Order on Weapons (våbenbekendtgørelsen) which is available in Danish at retsinformation.dk (opens a new tab).

If, as a business, you need to be in transit in Denmark with weapons, we consider such a situation to be import followed by export. Applications for transit are processed by the Administrative Centre of the Police (Politiets Administrative Center) or by the Danish National Police (Rigspolitiet) depending on the type of weapon and the country of destination.

Transit with ordinary weapons to EU, EEA and Nordic countries

You must apply for an import/export licence from the Weapons Department (Våbenafdelingen) of the Administrative Centre of the Police if you travel through Denmark to another EU or EEA country or to the Faroe Islands or Greenland with the following types of weapons:

  • Alarm and signal weapons
  • Airguns with a calibre exceeding 4.5mm
  • Weapons designed for hunting, fishing and competition shooting as well as matching components and ammunition
  • Muzzle loaders manufactured before 1870
  • Breech loaders manufactured before 1870 which cannot use fixed ammunition
  • The licence is valid for six months. Go to the self-service portal.

Transit with special weapons and transit to countries other than EU, EEA and Nordic countries
If you travel through Denmark to destinations other than EU, EEA and Nordic countries, and if you want to take other types of weapons than those mentioned above, explosives or military equipment in transit, you must apply to the Danish National Police for a transit licence.

Go to the self-service portal.

Your firearms pass contains a list of the weapons that you are allowed to bring on travels by virtue of your firearms pass. Firearms and interchangeable barrels will appear from your firearms pass but not weapon accessories, such as sound moderators. If, for example, you both have a rifle system and an interchangeable barrel, both will appear from your firearms pass – in separate lines.

Firearms and interchangeable barrels can be entered on a firearms pass. This means that sights, sound moderators and other types of weapons, such as bolts, which are not firearms per se, cannot be entered on a firearms pass.

Weapon accessories, such as sights and sound moderators, that require a weapon certificate can be declared for travel out of/into Denmark.

It is your own responsibility to check the rules of the country(ies) that you are travelling to or through as regards import, export and possession/use of weapons in the relevant country(ies). Weapon components such as bolts, stocks, triggers, etc., are considered to be part of the firearm. Such weapon components can be brought along under the same rules as those applicable to the weapon to which the component belongs, as long as the weapon itself is entered on the firearms pass.

If you want to import/export a weapon into/out of Denmark, you have several options:

  • Firearms pass: Travel ID for firearms and barrels that you can use for travels lasting no more than three months to an EU member state.
  • Declaration: Declaration to the customs authorities of firearms, weapon components, weapon accessories and ammunition that you can use for travels globally lasting no more than three months. The declaration must be made in Denmark and covers only import/export into/out of Denmark. Therefore, you must ensure that you comply with the rules of the country that you are travelling to or through.
  • Import/export licence: Permission to import/export items falling within the weapon legislation into/out of Denmark permanently or for a period exceeding three months.
